AMY POEHLER'S SMART GIRLS RULE

August 8, 2017

What can I say?  I thought Amy Poehler was a successful and very funny comedian.  I'm a fan.  I didn't see the girl power angle until a few years ago. And I LOVE it! Seems that more of us are wanting to empower girls to be themselves, strive for excellence and be proud to be smart girls. Unfortunately, that's not status quo out there.  So thank you Amy for starting Smart Girls.

Smart Girls is dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves.  They emphasize imagination and intelligence over "fitting in."

Amy's work on Saturday Night Live 2001 - 2008 brought her to the mainstream, and she began a long time friendship with cast member Tina Fey hosting the news together.  She left SNL to play the beloved character Leslie Knope on the NBC hit Parks and Recreation.  In December 2015, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  And after 18 Primetime Emmy Award Nominations, she finally won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Saturday Night Live.  Poehler has appeared in a number of films including Sisters, Wet Hot American Summer, Mean Girls, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, Blades of Glory, Envy, Shrek the Third, Mr. Woodcock, Hamlet 2, and Inside Out.

Poehler and Tina Fey have hosted the Golden Globe Awards three times from 2013 - 2015. Probably the most famous and polarizing joke was directed at Taylor Swift, who later responded with a Madeleine Albright quote: "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women." Poehler responded, agreeing that she will go to hell, but for "other reasons".

Amy published her autobiography "Yes, Please" in 2014.  She spoke about body image, parenthood, and finding her limitations.

But Amy has made up for the Taylor Swift joke in my humble opinion with the advent of Smart Girls.  It's an online venture with friend and producer Meredith Walker.  Poehler said to the media at the launch, "We at Smart Girls are excited to be working with Legendary and look forward to providing funny and inspirational content for all of the goofballs out there." According to their website, they are ..."dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves. We emphasize intelligence and imagination over “fitting in.” We celebrate curiosity over gossip. We are a place where people can truly be their weird and wonderful selves. We are funny first, and informative second, hosting the party you want to attend."

More of that. Yes, Please.
